I know I passed this on once, but I wanted to again - if anyone has something about Carl they'd like to share - a story maybe, or just how they remember him, I'd love to read them. You can do it by pulling up his obituary on www.schoedinger.com, funeral date 10/15. Posting is very easy. One of the people in the train club has already done so, and everyone can read them. More Shipmates Remembered CHRISTIANSEN......He had a ruptured appendix and was high lined to USS GUADACANAL, a Helicopter Amphibious Landing ship. GUADACANAL had an M.D. who operated on CHRISTIANSEN successfully. MACCLOUD, DK3. He was trained by DK1 Stewart who retired after 19 years and six months. I don't remember where MACCLOUD's home town was. He was another outstanding DK. My screen name confirmation: Durchfall43@aol.com. Durchfall is German, "diarrhea" and '43 was the year I was born. No one wants that screen name. |

Reply to David Orsburn's message number: 2238 Hi David, Yes I remember Brown the barber, and your right about the earring. I also remember one time some of the 1st class, chiefs and a few officers were complaining that Brown wasn't shaving around the ears and neck. AT that time in civilian world it was a custom for the barber to put a little shaving cream around your ears and the back of your neck and trim that up. Well that in book was one of the worst mistakes that was made. First of all Brown didn't like that idea, meant more work and extra time for a haircut. 2nd I'm not sure where Brown got his straight razor, not sure how he sharpened it, and I'm almost positive he didn't have a leather shaving strop. All that combined led to a lot of pulled hair instead of cutting haha. Rough hair cuts. Got to the point that people use to tell him never mind the shaving. haha. Now was Brown dumb like a fox or what? haha. Paul Rabidoux 61-63 |

61 - 63 Shipmates It really brings back memories to hear (read) you guy's! I occasionally have to view the cruise book to refresh my memory with a picture. I was thinking this morning as I was combing my hair, do you guys remember Brown, the ships barber? I remember his greeting was always "Whas Happenin" and the expected reply was mostly "Yeah, that's whas happenin, Brown" Also I believe he was before his time because he sometimes had a small gold earring in one ear. Dennis, I would definitely attend a reunion in Florida. Also I would sure like to see Ozzie from the engineering dept again. He was frequently on the boat crew. |

I've got more names to add to ASHLAND'S site: PFARNER, ET1---Electronics Technician. A genius to us college boy officers. LESSEUR, EM1. One of his ancestors was the founder of "Jolly Green Giant" canned peas and it's logo and then TV commercials. Lesseur never mentioned that he was an heir. He had nothing to prove. A very competent EM. Given his surname, he was probably raised close to the Connecticut or in it since many French-American immigrants settled in that State. Ensign Richard Fournier, was born in Waterbury, CT. Fluent in French. "GASCOIGNE." The surname of a sailor who also had a French Surname. I don't remember anything else about him. |

Reply to Ozzie Klein's #2233: Hi Ozzie, Yes, I remember Wahoo. Great guy, had fun with him. I don't think there was anyone in the 1st or 2nd division that I didn't get along with. Exception being Childress. Yes I would like his email address if he doesn't mind me having it. Mine is rabster43@cox.net I also remember side cleaning. I remember one day we had to climb back up the line to get on deck so the blank could be moved over, and I guess I was taking too long, because the next thing I remember I thought I got a sudden burst of energy and started going up the line pretty fast. Just before I got to the top I looked up and there you were pulling me up by my life line. I'm pretty sure I thanked you, but in case I didn't, Thanks, because that sure helped. haha |

Reply to Paul Rabidoux's message #2232: Paul, Do any of you 2nd Div guys remember Wahoo, Weldie Gaulin? He used to hang with Preston and Rameriz. He also was on sidecleaners with me. We went to school together and live in the same town. He now is in Milwaukee and has a summer place here in the town he grew up. We will be together next week for our twice a year get together of the guys. I have his e-mail and will post it if you want to contact him. I try and get him involved but he always comes back with there is nobody that remembers him . We could have fun with him if some of the guys started sending him e-mail and hopefully get him to come to the reunion next year. I guess I would try and make it if it was in May but once I get back up here I have a full plate till I returen to Florida in the fall. So if any of you reunion planners read this maybe we could move it back to May?? Oz 61-63 |

In response to David Osborne's message #2223: Hi David, I remember Don Rameriz. Have you seen him since you got out? I seen 2 people since I got out. I got out in 63, got married in 64 and SK3 Jack Kloostra came to my wedding. Several years later I went to visit him in MI. I joined a SeaBee reserve unit in Providence R.I. in 1972 and then in 1973 activated myself back to active duty. I was stationed at Davisville R.I. with NMCB-40 [ Naval Mobile Construction Battalion ] I was sitting in the company's office and happened to look out, and just then Jim Gillispie walked by. Remember he was in 2nd division with us. He was the company clerk for Childress. I couldn't believe my eyes, it was darn near 10 years to the day sine I left the Ashland. I'm wondering if you recall the name of the leading seaman we had in 2nd division? The day we were pulling out for our Med Cruise, he ask for permission to empty a trash can in the dumpster on the pier. They later found the trash can along with his work uniform in the trash, he was never to be seen again. Well not by us anyway. haha. |

Hey, guys, the reference to "Armed Forces Day" reminds me that it is this Saturday, May 16th. Armed Forces Day is always the third Saturday in May. The Armed Forces Day I remember the most was in May, 1956. Ashland had played around in the Atlantic for a few days on the way to the Portsmouth Naval Ship Yard, Kittery, Maine. We arrived at the yard Saturday morning, and shortly thereafter the Liberty Party departed ship. Since no work was scheduled that weekend, the Liberty Party included all of the Gunners. As soon as they were gone ashore, the Ship Yard Commandant told the skipper, "You will entertain visitors today!" The result, of course, was my famous picture, posted on the Ashland website under my name on the pictures for 1950-1957, of the kids cranking around the twin 40mm gun mount starboard of the ET Shack on the 03 deck. If you don't normally fly the Stars and Stripes at you home or living place, do it anyway this Saturday in honor of those defending our freedoms now, and in the past. In response to David Osborne's message #2223: and Ozzie Klein's message 2227: Hi David and Ozzie, You're right Ozzie, Childress and Caldwell were the pride of 2nd Division. Caldwell started in the 1st division, but came to the 2nd when JC left the ship on emergency leave. I think we were on our Med cruise when that happened. In my opinion that was the best thing that happened to 2nd division [Jesse Childress leaving]. For some reason there were 2 people J.C. did not like. One was me and the other was a 3rd class Bos'n Mate, [his name slips me right now] but J.C. worked hard enough and got the 3rd class busted down to seaman. He then went with the Quarter Masters. I can still recall several incidents that happened to me and Zabroski 2nd div. because of J.C. In fact by the time I got out I thought my name was " Dumb F@#K Frenchman " Old J.C. had a nasty habit of calling me that. Actually out side of working for J.C. I had a pretty good time aboard the Ashland. Paul Rabidoux 1961-1963 |

In response to Ozzie Klein's #2227: Sorry Ozzie, I got the Divisions out of order. Childress was in the Second Div. and Caldwell was in the First Div.. Childress and Caldwell were from the same general area of Kentucky as I was. The 3rd class Bos'n mate in the Second Div. you may be thinking of could be Vogt. The first class bos'n mates were Caldwell, Watkins, and Clark. I remember Clark as being one heck of a good guy. David Osborn 61-63 |

I was "one " of those girls who met you handsome "swabbies" on Market Street. We also went to the YMCA where you got in for .50 if you were in uniform. Since I was in the Navy reserve...every once in awhile I did wear my uniform along with my fellow reservists. The guys from the ASHLAND were the best dancers and most thoughtful. Perfect gentlemen. That is where I met my wonderful husband JERRY G. BARRETT. It was love at first sight. Married for 50 years and three wonderful children. As you know, I lost him 3 years ago but my heart is still with him. Do you remember the ship party on Richmond St? I believe it was at the LITHUANIAN CLUB. What a blast! We all did the SOUTH PHILLY STRUT. You do bring back a lot of wonderful memories...Thanks friend! Joan Barrett Jerry G. Barrett SK3 1954 - 1957 |

Al's list of people he remembers from his time on USS Ashland prompted me to think of the men in the electric shop when I went aboard as a EMFA. Elect CPO Fred Waldbeeser, Charlie Aubry EM2 , Steve Farkas EM2 , Connie DeFlice EM2, Charlie Cobler EM2, Maril Williams EM3, Ken Unger EM2. There was a guy everyone called Slim. I don't recall his name. There were other EM's but I don't remember their names now. Jim Reed, Charles Burke, Max Goddard and Ron Thompson came on later. Shortly after I went aboard we went into the Navy shipyard at Philadelphia. I don't recall much about the shipyard but I do remember the girls who came into Philly on Saturday nights to meet sailors on Market Street. |

Some of the men I remember from USS Ashland: Robert "Bob" Pardue; Retired as a Master Chief Ships' Serviceman. He was in charge of the ship's store. He was an E-3 with one hash mark when he reported aboard ASHLAND. Pardue was smarter than I since I loathed taking inventories. Richard Magner SK2. Home town: Hagerstown, MD. Another very intelligent storekeeper. Kaufman: One of the funniest sailors. Not sure what his rating was. Most likely a "stew burner." He told me with amusing sarcasm it was a privilege to shine the ship's bell. LCDR Richard Marriner. Herr Kapitan Eugene C. Rueff. Deceased. SH1 Vernard Christian SK3 Terry Bessey YNC Hiram Gant Ship Fitter E-5 Crist. He was also the ship's diver and entitled to a shot of brandy which was locked up in sick bay. The Gedunk Machine: Honorable mention to it. When in crapped out due to the heat, it was fixed ASAP. W-1 Warrant Officer Duane Williamson AKA "Chips." I think he retired in the Tidewater Area. Stewards: Amadeo Kackanindin {?}; Quitoles; Reyes. LTJG Tom Mundel. USNR. Graduated from some NY state college. LTJG Richard Fournier: He remained in the Reserves and was a 4 striper when he retired: Home town: Waterbury, CT. LT Sam Earle. Supply Corps Department Head. Deceased. DOTSON, Kermit: CS1. BUMMER, Richard: CS3. Harvey Jewell. Mustang LCDR. Born somewhere in Wisconsin. Former Chief of a fleet boat submarine. An LDO Chief Engineer. He and the "snipes" he commanded won The Red E for Engineering Excellence. Sam Earle and the ship's cooks won the Nay Award for the best chow in Phiblant. John Flynn: a Mustang with the title of First Lieutenant since he was a former Boatswain's Mate E-7 and was in charge of the "deck apes." I don't know where his home town was. BM1 August Kindla. Ensign Robert Ray. He was the son of some U.S. Army Bird Colonel and born somewhere in Texas. Ray reported to Mr. Flynn. W-1 Lapel Miller. Born somewhere in Mississippi. He was the Main Propulsion Assistant. LTJG Art Lassley. Another limited duty officer and an up through the rates CPO Electrician's Mate. Wife: Delta. Lassley had previously been stationed in Pocatello [?] Idaho where he studied Atomic, Biological and Chemical Warefare though that's a guess. He smoked House of Windsor cigars as did most of the officers in the wardroom. USMC "shave tails" who'd never had any sea duty would barf from the smell of those stinky stogies. DK2 Lester Stewart. Disbursing clerk. Home town: Skokie, Illinois or close to it. I made sure he could retire as a DK1 by talking to the Operations Officer, LT Dave Isquith to allow Stewart to take one of those large yellow colored pay forms. LT Isquith was a Naval Academy graduate. Wife: Clair. LTJG Mike Klesa, USNR. Home town: Somewhere in Ohio. Dennis Thrush. E-3. He got out of the USN after 4 years. Home town: Bakersfield, California. ..................Starboard. I looked that term up on this gizmo. Steerbord: Old Norwegian. LTJG Thurmond Scott Graham. Home town: Burnt Chimney, North Carolina. Boiler Technician CPO Philips. ASHLAND's boiler tubes crapped out in the now infamous Gitmo. I was determined to get replacement boiler tubes by using "autovon" long distance calls. Finally those civil servants who weren't civil nor servile finally got weary of those telephone calls. Boiler tubes were flown to NAS Guantanamo Bay via a four engine propeller airplane. Since I had no intention to be a "lifer" I didn't care if I annoyed those "double dippers." Bob Hoff: He's been called "Tom." Hoff was a W-4 Warrant Officer. His nickname was "The gray fox." He was in the Pacific Theater during WWII and spent some time in Christ Church, Australia. He was a gentleman. His spouse and he had a home which became a home away from home. Sick Bay: One of the Corpsman's surname was Burris. An E-5. Chief Gunner's Mate' surname was Guth. He was also a master of arms. He liked to fish as did many sailors. They took off their T-shirts which was a violation of NAVREGS. I ignored that stupid rule since fishing was good for morale. "Pop" Swaszy. A DC1. He had a ribbon on his uniform that none of us youngsters had ever seen. I asked Pop what it was for. "Son, this is a WW1 Victory ribbon." He also stated that he'd been a Carpenter's Mate before there were any Damage Controlmen. His favorite liberty port was Havana, Cuba. LTJG Thomas Hopson. He stayed in the USN. |

I went straight to precom school. When we boarded the ship it was in pretty good shape and we were not too long from shake down cruises. I remember Childress, First Class Bos'n Mate 1st Div. spending hours teaching us to tie knots "quickly". He said once you will never forget these and will use them all your life. Know what he was right, and every time I tie a bowline knot I think of him and Caldwell, Bos'n Mate 2nd Div. I still have my dog tags which I wear with honor, and my grandson has made me promise to make them his someday. I hope to make time soon to go through my boxes of pictures and scan the Ashland ones to send to you. While I was on the deck of LST 325, immediately after the lcvp experience I called Don Rameriz, another shipmate that attended assualt boat coxswain school with me, and babbled on and on about how it felt to hit the beach one more time and drop the ramp! Well enough of that I could go on for hours with sea stories, I appreciate you and others for the work you do with the web site and other activities! David Orsburn, Seaman |

Responding to message 2219: Ozzie & Paul, I also spent some time on the helm during the same period as you. It would be great to touch it again! We have an operating LST docked here in Evansville. This past Veterans Day they had the VP's in the water, giving rides to the public. When the coxswain learned that I was an assault boat coxswain he let me drive the boat and beach it on a sand bar in the Ohio. What a thrill! David Osborn SN |

The lady is Pauline Poirier who plans, if able, to have her sons bring her to the dinner. She says she is in her early nineties. Her son will help her make reservations with Ed. Gene Art and Pauline Poirier lived in Manchester. They attended many of our reunions until Art passed away in 1999. You can read the obituary his son prepared here...... |

Responding to message: 2214 Hi Ozzie, You're right, the picture of the helm does bring back some memories. I remember the first time I was on that helm. I wasn't 10 minutes into it when the O.O.D. piped down and said we were going to conduct some ASW drill. Wow, what an experience that was for my first go at the helm. The O.O.D. at the time was Archambault, Guy LT. If my memory serves me right he was from my home state, Rhode Island Paul, LT. Guy Archambault was aboard 1962 - 1965. He and his wife live in Jamestown, Rhode Island. |

Jimmie, Do you recall how many times ASHLAND made the trip to Havana in 1954, 1955, 1956? I thought the logs on the web page might have helped, but web page logs don't cover those dates. Ed, I was in Havanna, Cuba twice. I believe the last time was in 1956 a month before I was released from the Navy. Jimmie |

WWII Veterans Memorial TripMy main participation in useful community oriented activities is thru the Exchange Club of Lynchburg, VA. The Exchange Club is a group of civic oriented folks who help the community in many ways. We have programs in child abuse prevention, Americanism (such as "Giving a kid a flag to wave", and installing "Freedom Shrines"), community service, and support of our youth. Wednesday I participated in a trip for over 70 World War II veterans to visit the Marine Memorial in Quantico, VA, the Arlington National Cemetery, and the WWII Memorial in downtown Washington DC. We had three chartered busses to cary the veterans and their escorts for the trip which included a box lunch and an evening buffet meal at the Marine Museum. The trip was free to the veterans and their escorts. Donations from various individuals and local organizations underwrote the cost our guests. The major contribution was from an immigrant from Belgium in the late 1940's. The club members paid their own way so that contributions were not used for our trip. Preparations for the trip had begun almost a year ago. Club members involved on the trip paid their own way. We had a Fire Department EMT on each bus with a full life pack, which, we are glad to say, was not needed. The busses left the parking lot at Liberty University at 6AM and returned at 10 minutes to 10 PM. A great day was had by all. We had one gentleman who flew in from the mid-west the day before and was escorted by his son.
Most were still fairly agile, but as you see in the picture, some required the use of a wheel chair. Our |

| Jimmie and Mike at the helm of USS Ashland (LSD-1)
|
|
(Tuesday, April 28, 2009) Carol and I met up with Mike McKeon at the entrance to the cruise terminal at Port Everglades. After showing our reservations and ID a couple of times and then standing in a very warm area with others on the tour, a young third-class petty officer came for us and we were off to tour the USS Ashland (LSD-48), followed by a young female engineman whose duties were to keep us in line. Work quickly spread among the members of our tour group and our Navy tour guides that there were two men in the group who had served on USS Ashland (LSD-1). I don't know how they learned this, unless it was Mike's LSD-1 cap and my blue denim shirt with USS Ashland LSD Association above the pocket. We did get to speak to the Captain and Executive Officer. Both greeted us warmly and spent so much time with Mike and I that our group got behind schedule. One highlight for us was seeing and placing our hands on the helm from USS Ashland (LSD-1). I can't speak for Mike, but this was the best part of the tour for me. The helm had been bought out of storage and was displayed in the turnaround compartment with a poster identifying it as the helm from USS Ashland (LSD-1). The members of out tour group enjoyed watching as Mike and I placed our hands on the helm. For me, the last time I touched it was in May, 1956. | Robert Parish is looking for men to serve as officers. |
|
Our Association is in dire need of members to step up and get involved in our Association. We have been having a big problem getting members to serve as officers of the association. We have to fill both the first and second vice-president positions. Also, we are in need of a web master and historian. Anyone that will help in any of these openings please let Bob Parrish, chairman of the nomination committee, know as soon as possible. If our association is to continue we must have members willing to feel these positions. I am sure all of our members want our association to continue. The members of the 40's and 50's were the ones who carried the load in getting this Association up and going in the beginning. It is going to be up to the 60's, 90's and 2000's if we are to continue as an Association. Let's all of us give our prayerful thoughts on how we can help our Association. Comments about this picture will be added below, as they come in: Friday, March 13, 2009 Ed Bolen to Joe: I remember most of the guys, but can't put names to them. The picture was taken during our sojourn to the Med. I'm thinking that picture was taken adjacent to the Straits of Gibraltar. Is Fessler the guy your arm is on? I'm thinking the fellow next to your right arm was a radarman. As well as the redhead. How many names do you have for them? One of my biggest regrets about my Navy days is that I hadn't learned the need to journal my travels. Ed B Friday, March 13, 2009 Joe Josephson to Ed Bolen and Jimmie: You're correct, the guy with my arm around is FESSLER, I remember now. You could be right about the guy on my right. | Carl Dewhurst Aboard 1955 - 1958 |
|
Lora reports on Carl's health: So far, so good. He is getting some physical therapy from an in-home health care service. And for the most part, he is obeying his fluid restriction - except when we go out he doesn't watch quite as close as he should. As usual, I am being cautiously optimistic. If we can keep him off dialysis for several more months, I'll take it. Bless the docs - they have done everything possible to prolong his life, since surgery isn't an option anymore. I'm afraid once he is on dialysis, he won't last long - they're not even sure he can take it, his heart is so bad. They are thinking he may live another year, max. But he's had 2 miracles already, so we'll see. He sure is a fighter - I can't say I'd have his will to keep going if I were in his place. Everyone's thoughts and prayers are certainly appreciated - for both of us. After being by his bedside through all this for 11 years, it's really wearing on me too. It seems like now that we are getting closer to the end, he is in the hospital even more frequently - guess that's to be expected. I will keep sending updates periodically. Lora |

I have many Ashland crew pics (mostly of the ET, RM, RD, QM') guys and a stray GM. If you hung around the 03 level where the radio shack was, or one of the signalman/QM flag bags, and the 40mm/20mm gun mounts were, you were in my pics. Also used to spend a lot of time on the flag bridge area with the QM/signalmen, I used to like to use the flashing lights and the yardarm blinkers. I have a lot of slides from our Med cruise and in the ice fields etc. CHEERS! JOE |

Lora's report on Carl's health, via email February 5, 2009: Carl showed a remarkable positive change yesterday and seemed a lot better. I am still guardedly optimistic because they are now trying to get him back to pill form medicine - and they are giving him something new, so it remains to be seen how this will work. So I don't think he's totally out of the woods yet, but I am at least breathing a little bit. I don't know what's keeping him going - and the docs don't know either. But they have been honest & told me they don't think too many more of these miracles will happen - they think he probably won't live but another year, at the most. And with as often as he is going into the hospital now and as close to death as he keeps getting, I think they are right. But I guess I will have to quit sending out these emails beause he seems to cheat death :) I apologize for the false alarm - but he was so bad on Tuesday I didn't know what else to think. I will keep everyone posted......... he will be in the hospital a while yet, because they are going to keep him there until they see how things go. Lora's report on Carl's health, via email: Ed, if you could pass this along to the other Ashlanders (sorry, this was the only email address I could put my hands on at the moment) - that would be appreciated. Carl has been in the hospital over a week, and things aren't looking good at all. This time they cannot seem to find the combination of drugs to straighten out his congestive heart failure. He is very weak, and now for some reason seems to be saying things out of the blue that make no sense. I get the sense that what's left of his kidney function is starting to slip, and now they are finding cysts on his liver. Prayers are appreciated right now; I don't think he may even have as long to live as the docs thought. He is at Mt Carmel East, in the heart wing, room 2E38. I will keep you posted. ![]() The successful bid for the flag at Branson was a group of 60's men combined to win and named it for Commander Price. I contacted Mrs. Price and gave her a short history of the flag and included pictures. I told her I would ship it to her if she choose, however, it would need to be shipped back for transport to the 2009 reunion. Following is her response. "December 17, 2008 Dear Mr. Miller, We are so honored that the crew members of the USS Ashland LSD-1 elected to name the 2008 bid as Commander Arthur Price. He was always so proud of the crew that served with him 1961-63. We enjoyed the reunion in San Diego several years ago. It would be best for you to keep the flag. Perhaps I may be able to see it, if and when you have a reunion in San Diego. It will be safer with you and you will be assured of it's availability at the reunion in 2009. Thank you for the pictures. It's wonderful to be part of such a caring organization. Sincerely, Peggy W. Price" |

E-mail received: 11/16/2008 Just ran across The USS Ashland Site. I was aboard Her between 1966 and 1968. I found it interesting that 15 Men who were aboard Her during The 60's attended The Branson Reunion. Could you tell me how I could receive a list of the names of those 15 USS Ashland LSD 1 Alumni? Thanking You in Advance, Art Prescott E-mail received: 11/17/2008 Thank you very much for your quick response. Unfortunately, after reviewing the list you provided, there are not any names that I recognize. I was aboard Ashland LSD 1 from 1965-1968. Prior to going aboard, I was working to be an electrician, however, when I arrived, I was sent to the Boiler Room. I was not them for very long before I was sent mess cooking for 3 Month's. When my 3 Month's were finished.... I was back in The Boiler Room for a few days and was sent back to be a mess cook again. During the 2nd round of being assigned to being a mess cook, I decided that the only person on the ship that had more power that The Cooks..... was The Captain Himself. I decided that I was not going to do a 3rd round of being a mess cook..... and so I started putting chits in to become a cook. That never got past the BT Chief and so..... one day when The Captain came down to eat lunch with us..... I approached Him and a few days later..... I was a cook. Naturally, I was aware that there would be threats as a result, UMJC Party... etc., however, had enough by then and thought the change was worth whatever came my way. In the end, there were only some words on the beach..... and that was that. Even with the first 6 Month's being a bit tough...... my time aboard The Ashland, was the turning point in my life and it made me grow-up. I learned a great deal and I look back on that time, with very fond memories and think that it had much to do, with the success I enjoyed after that time. When I left the ship, My Rating was CS3 and I had already passed the exams to become a CS2. This never happened, as I was cut along with many others as a result of The War coming to an end. Thank you for your offer to assist in allowing me to be included in receipt of The Newsletter. My Home Address is : Art Prescott 138 - West Buster Reed Drive Hot Springs, AR. 71913 P.S. I grew up in St. Petersburg, Florida and that is where I lived prior to going aboard Ashland LSD 1. |

| Veterans can now salute the flag |
VA Department of Veterans Affairs Office of Public Affairs Media Relations Washington, DC 20420 (202) 461-7600 www.va.gov News Release FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE October 30, 2008 New Law Authorizes Veterans' Salutes during National Anthem WASHINGTON (Oct. 30, 2008) -- Veterans and active-duty military not in uniform can now render the military-style hand salute during the playing of the national anthem, thanks to changes in federal law that took effect this month. "The military salute is a unique gesture of respect that marks those who have served in our nation's armed forces," said Secretary of Veterans Affairs Dr. James B. Peake. "This provision allows the application of that honor in all events involving our nation's flag." The new provision improves upon a little known change in federal law last year that authorized veterans to render the military-style hand salute during the raising, lowering or passing of the flag, but it did not address salutes during the national anthem. Last year's provision also applied to members of the armed forces while not in uniform. Traditionally, members of the nation's veterans service organizations have rendered the hand-salute during the national anthem and at events involving the national flag while wearing their organization's official head-gear. The most recent change, authorizing hand-salutes during the national anthem by veterans and out-of-uniform military personnel, was sponsored by Sen. Jim Inhofe of Oklahoma, an Army veteran. It was included in the Defense Authorization Act of 2009, which President Bush signed on Oct. 14. The earlier provision authorizing hand-salutes for veterans and out-of-uniform military personnel during the raising, lowering or passing of the flag, was contained in the National Defense Authorization Act of 2008, which took effect Jan. 28, 2008. |

For all CPOs past, present, futureHAVE YOU HEARD: How to know when you are in the presence of a ‘Real Chief Petty Officer’:• The CHIEF doesn't sleep with a night light. The CHIEF isn't afraid of the dark. The dark is afraid of the CHIEF. • The CHIEF’s tears can cure cancer. • The CHIEF once visited The Virgin Islands. They are now simply called The Islands. • The CHIEF has counted to infinity . . . twice! • The CHIEF frequently donates blood to the Red Cross, just never his own. • Superman owns a pair of CHIEF pajamas. • The CHIEF has never paid taxes. He just sends in a blank form and includes a picture of himself. • If the CHIEF is late, then time had damn well better slow down. • The CHIEF actually died four years ago, but the Grim Reaper can't get up the courage to tell him. • The CHIEF refers to himself in the fourth person. • The CHIEF can divide by zero. • If the CHIEF ever calls your house, be in! • The CHIEF doesn't leave messages; he leaves warnings. • The CHIEF can slam a revolving door. • The CHIEF was sending an email one day, when he realized that it would be faster to run. • When the Incredible Hulk gets angry, he transforms into the CHIEF. • When the CHIEF exercises, the machine gets stronger. • Bullets dodge the CHIEF. • The CHIEF once took an entire bottle of sleeping pills. They made him blink. . . once. • The first lunar eclipse took place after the CHIEF challenged the sun to a staring contest. The sun blinked first. • The REAL CHIEF never used a question mark in his entire life. He believes that the interrogative tense is a sign of weakness. • REAL CHIEFS think Ensigns should be seen and not heard, and never, ever be allowed to read books on leadership. • REAL CHIEFS do not have any civilian clothes. • REAL CHIEFS have CPO Association Cards from their last 5 commands. • REAL CHIEFS do not remember any time they weren't Chief's. • REAL CHIEFS favorite national holiday is CPO Initiation. • REAL CHIEFS keep four sets of dress khaki uniforms in the closet in hopes they will come back. • REAL CHIEFS favorite food is shipboard SOS for breakfast. • REAL CHIEFS don't know how to tell civilian time. • REAL CHIEFS call each other 'Chief.' • REAL CHIEFS greatest fear is signing for property book items. • REAL CHIEFS dream in Navy blue and gold, white, haze Gray and occasionally khaki. • REAL CHIEFS have served on ships that are now war memorials or tourist attractions. • REAL CHIEFS get tears in their eyes when the Chief' dies in the movie ' Operation Pacific.' • REAL CHIEFS Don't like Certified Navy Twill. Wash Khaki is the only thing to make a uniform out of. • REAL CHIEFS can find their way to the CPO Club blindfolded, on 15 different Navy Bases. • REAL CHIEFS have pictures of ships in their wallets. • REAL CHIEFS do not own any pens that do not have 'Property of U.S. Government' on them. • REAL CHIEFS do not get the mandatory flu shots. • REAL CHIEFS do not order supplies, they swap for them. • REAL CHIEFS favorite quote is from the movie Ben Hur, 'We keep you alive to serve this ship.' • REAL CHIEFS think excessive modesty is their only fault. • REAL CHIEFS hate to write evaluations, except for their own. • REAL CHIEFS turn in a 4 page brag sheet for their evaluation. • REAL CHIEFS last ship was always better. • REAL CHIEFS know that the black tar in their coffee cup makes the coffee taste better. • REAL CHIEFS idea of heaven: Three good PO1's and a Division Officer who does what he is told. • REAL CHIEFS think John Wayne would have made a good Chief, if he had not gone soft and made Marine movies. • REAL CHIEFS use the term 'Good Training' to describe any unpleasant task such as scraping the sides of the ship or having to sleep on your seabag in the parking lot because there was no room in the barracks. |

It's getting close to the end for Delores as the pain has gotten so bad that she will not eat & the meds to keep her comfortable also keep her almost unconscious. She has made her peace with God & is ready. The Priest was there to give her the last rites. She was upbeat up until yesterday when she said for the first time "I am not doing very well." She has suffered enough so it's on to the next life. Thank you all for the prayers & support. Maril |

Anthony, I served aboard the USS Ashland LSD-1 from November 1953 until July of 1956. I believe the picture I have attached shows your dad with another sailor and me at the Seamen's Club in Genoa, Italy, on New Year's Eve, December 31, 1954. I think I still have the cork from the magnum of champagne we had that night. The picture was taken by a photographer who took candids and took orders for later delivery the same night. In 1954, that was real service. Since we had been in the Mediterranean Sea for three plus months, she got lots of business. I bought the picture! My rate was as Electronic Technician and did not work directly with your dad, but as shipmates, we were celebrating the New Year together. I'm in the middle. The other gentleman to the left is Dick Wright, and he lives in Texas. I think that he did work with your dad. I'll be glad to send you a hard copy of the photo if you would want one. Dear Jimmy, I would love to take a moment of your time. My father Anthony Pusateri served on the Ashland in the 1950’s. He was my best friend and my hero. I would it if you could post his name on your bulletin board. I would love to correspond with some of his shipmates via email or telephone. I would greatly appreciate any and all information. Maybe he had a bunkmate or some friends that are in contact with you. My father was taken from me (heart attack) when I was only 24 years old. I would love to hear some stories about him when he was about that age with you guys. He use to tell me some stories about Rio, the artic, and some story about a polar bear. Thank you so much, Anthony Pusateri anthony@themasterscircle.com Phone: 800.451.4514 Phone: 516.822.5500 Ext. 123 --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Our records: Anthony Pusateri FP1 4/7/52 - 6/28/55 Deceased June 1990 These pictures of Anthony Pusateri were taken during the 1953 Arctic Cruise

"Many thanks for the card with all the names and notes from the Branson Reunion. I really appreciate the thoughtfulness of you and those who signed the card. Did you get the e-mail from the Skipper of the 48 inviting all LSD 1 shipmates to his change of command on August 15? I realize that not many will be able to make the trip but his invitation shows how much he thinks of our organization. Please excuse the writing but I am still having some trouble with my muscles. Many thanks and best regards. Gene" |

In reply to Message 2153 I went on the internet and found this, which I thought was pretty interesting: DEPARTMENT OF THE NAVY -- NAVAL HISTORICAL CENTER 805 KIDDER BREESE SE -- WASHINGTON NAVY YARD WASHINGTON DC 20374-5060 Plank Owners, Plank Owner Certificates, and Planking A "plank owner" is an individual who was a member of the crew of a ship when that ship was placed in commission. Originally, this term applied only to crewmembers present at the ship's first commissioning. Today, however, it is often applied to members of a recommissioning crew as well. "Plank owner" is not an official Navy term, and has consequently been variously defined by different Navy units. |

USS Ashland LSD Association again had a successful reunion in Branson Missouri. We had 82 present with 41 shipmates, 4 from the 40's, 22 from the 50's, and 15 from the 60's. Also in attendance were 32 spouses, 2 children, 1 grandchild, and 6 guests. It was great to once again have Carl and Lora Dewhurst with us. We had 4 first timers: Davie and Ginny Chapman, Don and Jean Dodge, Alex and Nancy Klimaski, and Winfred and Eilene Kenney. The 2009 reunion hosts will be Don Dodge and Dennis Weyer with the site to be known by July or early August in the Manchester, N.H. area. The 2010 reunion will be held in Springfield, Illinois. Reply to Message 2148 Carolyn and I will not make the Branson reunion mainly due to her need for follow-up doctor visits and the start of 10 sessions of radiation starting next Wednesday (6/18). Hope to see you next year where ever. Now, for the main reason for this note. I would like to try and clear up a misconception that appears in this message. By naval definition, "A Plank Owner is an honored member of the FIRST and the most illustrious crew which distinguished itself forever when it commissioned the USS Ashlands LSD-1 and LSD-48. Therefore, for LSD-1 you needed to be a crew member in June, 1943 and for the LSD-48 you needed to be a member of the crew in May, 1992. This would indicate that it is impossible to be a 50's plank owner. Since certificates are available from the Naval Institute to any individual or entity I'm sure persons have assumed incorrectly that because they were a member of a recommissioning crew they now became plank owners. We have addressed this question on a couple of occasions that I know of and I suppose we will see it again in the future. Peace! |

The attached powerpoint was put together by the two Master Chiefs onboard and it is running on the closed circuit TV system throughout the day. We will also do a cake cutting celebration later this afternoon. Instead of having the youngest and oldest cut the cake we plan to have the Sailor who has been onboard the longest (2002) and the newest (came onboard 3 days ago). A few comments to pass on: 1. My newsletter came today, so you can expect yours any day now. 2. The other day I received a copy of the Branson 2008 Vacation Guide. If you are going to the reunion, you will need this vacation guide. Mine came a couple of weeks after I requested a copy. Click on the link below to request a copy. 3. At the Lexington reunion, last year, some of the men brought their guitars and there was some good picking and grinning in the evening. Bring yours this year. 4. Carol and I made our reunion reservations with Ed Bolen and with the hotel. Let's make it easy on Ed, make yours soon. 5. I get e-mail asking how I'm doing after heart surgery. I feel better every day, still can't mow the lawn, lift heavy objects, etc. Have started Cardio Rehab, three times a week for 12 weeks which should get me in shape for the drive to Branson. 6. Ed Bolen said he just received his Lexington Memory Book and hopes yours will arrive shortly. |

Lives in Republic, MO., commuting distance for the reunion. The first part of March we had a flurry of registrants, but they have slacked off since then. But we still have over two months. Ed B Hi Ed, I am doing very well. Carol has let me drive a a time or two. I feel a bit better each day. I can tell I'm getting better for I'm starting to regain an interest in reading and the computer. Next week I will be starting cardio rehab at the hospital. We made our reservations for the reunion. | March 4, 208 Because I was wearing my USS Ashland cap, I was asked by a gentleman today if I had served on the USS Ashland. It seems that his father, Walter Hahn, from New York, had served aboard Ashland in the 1940's. A number of years ago, his son, Walter Jr, had many times seen my van with a USS Ashland bumper sticker on it. He was a police officer then and said if he saw me he intended to stop me and ask about the USSAshland. He probably saw it when ever I was visiting my youngest daughter when she was working at WSET here, since that was on the beat that he would have been driving. I didn't have the time to get his address so Paul could send him a "Guest copy" of the Ashlander. He is still in law enforcement of sorts so his phone is unlisted. If I ever see him again, I'll enquire further. Ed Bolen Note: In a second mail, Ed said Walter Hahn Sr., is deceased. |

| Jimmie: Please post on E-Mail News. Just received word on the passing of John D. Tschaepe on February 11, 2008 in Peoria, IL. Served aboard the Ashland LSD-1 in 1943 to 1945 as a CMM. He was a plankowner. I believe he may have been a founding member of the Ashland Association. He was very instrumental in dealing with the Navy Department to have the LSD-48 named as a second ship to bear the USS Ashland name. He is survived by his wife Vada. Paul Adams Shipmates, John Tschaepe received an award from our Association recognizing him as the founder. He put a lot of effort into getting us together as a unit, then stepped back to let the younger men take over. John wanted the Navy to name a new LSD after our first ship, USS Ashland (LSD-1). He wrote the petition, gathered the signatures and sent it off to the proper authorities at the Navy Department. The Navy replied to his letter and the petition we all signed, thanking John for for his interest and stated that when a new LSD was built our request would be give due consideration. The next LSD built was named USS ASHLAND (LSD 48). John was active in our Association until his health made travel too difficult. Jimmie Barnes, Historian |

| To all my friends: After some significant surgery (intestional/bowel) and a 7 day hospital stay I feel that I am slowly making it back to the real world. It probably is going to be a long haul to get my strength back and energy level but it will happen with time. Hindsight says that I lost between 50 and 60 pounds along the way and I look like I just came out of a Natzi concentration camp but everyone is trying to make me eat. Am even thinking in terms of going to Branson but the decision will wait for a pathology report and a few more weeks of rehap. Just wanted to really thank everyone for their calls, cards and especially the prayers. It was the E-Mail News network in action and it really worked! I did not get the name of the hospital but I think cards would be appreciated at their home address. Gene Paul Adams, Jr. 9 Andrea Road Newark, DE 19702 (302) 834-1806 |

| Deck Logs Paul Suchy has completed the typing of the February 1955 Decklogs. You will immediately note the difference between Jan.and Feb. logs. There is so much repetition in the logs, which makes a lot of work for the typist. Several of you have typed logs until it just got to be too much. Bob and I decided to include where the ship was, what was happening and who was doing it. Everything else, i.e., course and speed changes, magizine inspections, etc. will not be included. This certainly makes the typing easier. Take a look at February 1955. Comments please. Jimmie |

| Responding to message: 2108 I believe it is the helm from USS ASHLAND (LSD-1). The best I can remember in the picture one knob was missing. That knob was broken in typhone September 1945. We were taking 45 degre rolls. I remember at mess hall the helmsman say the helm wheel broke a knob fighting the typhoon. John Osborn MM2 1944 - 1946 John, The helm was repaired after ASHLAND reached repair facilities. Is the helm in the picture from our ship? Neither CDR Ward nor CAPT Keith have informed me that their investigation has lead to a conclusion. I believe it is from our ship and that it is sad that the helm was broken and ended up in a storage locker. We welcome all comments on this. Jimmie |

of the 1955 decklogs. At the top of this page is a link to the logs he has completed. I was aboard during this cruise in 1955, so reading the logs brings back memories of 52 years ago. |

| Please pass this on to all the ASHLAND (LSD 1) Sailors.
Below my signature block is a message from MCPON to the Sailors to celebrate the Navy's 232nd Birthday on Saturday, 13 October. I appreciate everything the Sailors of LSD-1 did throughout the years of all your service. I consider you all shipmates even you have retired. Happy Birthday. CDR Jeff Ward Commanding Officer USS ASHLAND (LSD 48) FPO AE 09564-1736 MCPON Birthday Message to the Fleet Our birthday is a celebration of our rich heritage and of the men and women who proudly call themselves United States Sailors. Our Navy was born on the crest of a wave. We have changed much over 232 years, but the spirit of those who serve our nation at sea remains strong, proud and forever connected to those who have served before us. October 13th we celebrate our customs, traditions and a culture unique to those of us who leave the comforts of home for the challenges of sea. There is a character to the United States Sailor, a language all our own and a shared sense of pride in being part of a crew. Our leaders must impress upon our youngest Sailors that wearing this uniform has always been more than just a reflection of what we do. I don't believe you can be an effective leader without understanding who we are, and who we are is tied directly to our heritage. We have branched out into other capabilities. We're leveraging your creativity and your ingenuity and providing your abilities to combatant commanders around the world. But we will always be, first and foremost, a maritime service. Sailors will be forever identified by their courage in the face of danger and the moral conviction to stand up for what's right. The term "ship, shipmate, self" was created at sea. To a United States Sailor, there is no better description of our culture and our character. When I consider our Navy heritage, I think of Sailors working in the harsh environments of our world's oceans just as we've done for 232 years. You're making the same sacrifices, serving our nation at sea. It is the common bond we share with those who have gone before us. Our history was forged at sea and every one of our separate communities has contributed to that legacy. On our birthday we will recall the sacrifices of our forefathers. It will be a day to search out a veteran from World War II or Korea or Vietnam who still remembers every face and every name of his shipmates lost in battle. Those veterans will tell you that their ties to the Navy have never been stronger, that the pride they feel in what you do fortifies them. Like the rest of the nation, our veterans are grateful for the blanket of protection you provide this country. On our Navy's birthday I join them and all of America in thanking you for what you do, and thanking your families for the support they provide us all. You are all members of the greatest Navy the world has ever known and it's an honor to serve with each of you. Happy birthday Shipmates. |

| USS ASHLAND (LSD 48) hosted some visitors Saturday, 15
September. Tom Wiedemann (in the blue shirt) was attached to the Construction Battalion that deployed to the Mediterranean onboard USS ASHLAND (LSD 1) back in August 1964. He was an enlisted Sailor assigned to the boats in ASHLAND's welldeck. Tom and his brother (an Army Colonel), and their wives came onboard for a tour of the ship. They spent time seeing the ship and talking with numerous Sailors about today's Navy compared to what Tom experienced back in the 60's. They had a great time and we were glad to have them onboard. Went down to 121 pounds, and is now up to 134. He's on oxygen now though, and is STILL smoking. Just can't seem to stop. We can't go to Branson - he thinks it is too far to drive (he insists he wants to help, and I insist he can't cause he gets double vision when his eyes get tired), and they won't let him fly with oxyg. | North Platte Canteen |
| From December 25, 1941 until April 1, 1946 more than
6 million servicemen and women who traveled through Nebraska during World War II fondly remember the hospitality of the North Platte Canteen where every troop train was met by volunteers who prepared and served sandwiches, coffee, cookies, cakes, and other homemade ‘goodies’ during stops there. -npcanteen.net Quite by accident I came across Bob Greene's unabridged audio book, "Once Upon A Town, The Miracle of the North Platte Canteen." This was the first I had heard of the canteen. After listening to the book I found the website North Platte Canteen How many of our ASHLAND WWII veterans visited the canteen during the ten-minute train stop for water? | Carl & I wanted to thank everyone for the card, and
for thinking of us. Carl is stable at the moment - that's about all I can
ask for these days. A good day is when he's not in the hospital - we're
thankful for the good days, and grin to get through the bad
ones. We will be moving in Sept or Oct. We are staying in the Columbus area, looking for something on one floor. Carl can hardly climb any stairs any more - actually, any kind of walking is tough, even just around the house. I will be sure to update everyone with our new contact info. Gene has been in touch with me, and we have ordered the plaque for the flag, which should be in at the end of the week. It was so disappointing that our group's quarterly tech release was that weekend, and I had to work - seems like when they are in KY the timing is never right. We do intend to be in Branson. I have already checked, and the dates are not a weekend I will have to work. We'll just have to see how it goes. Looks like there is plenty to see & do, so we will probably be going down early, if we go. Plus I see the motel has pool tables, so between that, swimming, and shopping, I can sure get my fill. Just wanted to keep in touch. Thanks again for thinking of us. Lora Carl Dewhurst BT3, 1955 - 1958 |

planned this reunion. Everyone had a good time and it is unfortunate more didn't attend. The tours were interesting, especially getting to see Smarty Junes. I have to confess I had never heard of Buffalo Trace whiskey until we visited the distillery. Friday afternoon and evening was free time so Carol and I drove down to Science Hill, Kentucky, to see our great-grandson, Devon Upperman (see picture below). From Lexington we went to Parkersburg, WV, to visit our son's grave and see family, then hurried back to Florida for Carol's son was coming down from Hammond, Indiana. | CO FAMILY UPDATE JUNE 17,
2007 |
| This message was sent to the families of men serving
aboard USS Ashland (LSD 48): From: CDR Ward, Jeffrey A. We have been home for about six weeks now. It has been nice to be able to spend time with our families and friends. We will remain in port for the majority of July, and then get underway at the end of the month for some training. As those of you in the area know quite well, just because the ship is back home doesn't mean the work has stopped. We have been spending the past six weeks conducting a lot of repairs during our Maintenance Availability. After being run for six months straight, the engines, electronics, boats, cranes, and other gear require a fair amount of maintenance and upgrades to ensure they will continue to operate to the fullest extent possible for the next 20 years. ASHLAND will host a Family Picnic on Saturday, July 14th at Seal Park on NAB Little Creek. We will put out more details to the Sailors soon, but I expect it will run from about 1030 - 1400. Families are certainly invited and there will be food, drinks, music, and activities for the kids. If you are in the area I hope you can join us. I look forward to seeing everybody out there. I went out to Lexington, Kentucky this past weekend to speak at the USS ASHLAND VETERANS ASSOCIATION REUNION. There were about 80 Sailors and their families from the first ASHLAND. USS ASHLAND (LSD 1) served our country from 1943 - 1969. It was a nice reunion and I had some great conversations with our ASHLAND shipmates from LSD 1. Those Sailors and their families all served their country back in their day, and they understand what our Sailors and families go though. They all expressed their heartfelt appreciation and gratitude to the Sailors and families of LSD 48. Stay Safe. CDR Jeff Ward Commanding Officer USS ASHLAND (LSD 48) FPO AE 09564-1736 |

| LSD-1 Ship's Helm |
| One of the items from USS Ashland (LSD-1) Captain Keith
obtained for display aboard USS Ashland (LSD 48) was the ship's helm. Several years ago crew members from LSD 48 told us there was an old helm on the quarterdeck. Last Saturday when CDR Ward visited our reunion in Lexington he was asked about the helm. Below is an e-mail we received from him: From: CDR Ward, Jeffrey A Subject: pic of helm Don Price had mentioned to me that we should have the wheel from LSD 1 onboard. I don't have Don's email. Could one of you look at the attached photo and tell me if it is the wheel from LSD 1. My BM's had it in a storeroom, but there is no marking of any sort to indicate what it is from. Thank you. CDR Jeff Ward Commanding Officer USS ASHLAND (LSD 48) FPO AE 09564-1736 CDR Ward sent a picture of the helm that was in the storeroom. Is it the helm that was on USS Ashland (LSD-1) from 1943 until 1970? To see the picture, click here: LSD-1 Ship's Helm |

| Good Time at Lexington Hello to all of my shipmates. Our reunion in Lexington KY was great! Calvin and Eleanor Nichols, and Tom and Norma Webb did an outstanding job of coordinating everything, and making us feel at home. I had a special treat, in that this was the first time that Dave Seely, Charles Tidwell and I, got together to reminisce about old times and to play guitars and sing. It was a real fine time for me. To my fellow 60's guys: I know most of you are at a busy time in your lives; a lot of you are still working, most of us have young grandchildren that we like to keep up with etc, etc. That being said, we have a year to make plans to attend the Branson, MO reunion. I'd like to encourage you to make plans NOW to attend. If you don't put it on your calendar now, something will surely come up that will prevent you from attending. I hate to say it, but none of us are getting any younger. If you've never attended a reunion, please consider coming to Branson; it promises to be a great one. Don Price, RD2 '62 - '65 |

| We were gone for a couple of weeks but thought we should
let you know that Bill Schorr is doing very well and will probably be going back to motorhome early next week. He will see both cardiologist and cardiac surgeon in next couple of weeks and then may be able to travel back to Illinois and continue his rehab there. Gene |

today, was able to eat some soft foods and is in good spirits. She thinks that in a day or two he will be moving out of Cardiac Care to a regular room. Gene |

| Jimmie, DonNita just called and said that Bill is out of surgery, doing well and had 3 by-passes. I don't know if I told you but when he was having chest pain, she took him to closest hospital. They were very busy and so they were only taking them in order. Bill told DonNita to take him to Harlingen...What a godsend that turned out to be! They have seen him once and will see him again at 8 p.m. She did say that he looks better now than he did after his last two surgeries. Jeannine |

| Hi Jimmie, DonNita called a little while ago and said that the reason things are so delayed is because Bill got bumped to this afternoon. She got a call from surgery probably at about the half way point that he was doing well. She figured I would be watching the clock and she was so right.! Hopefully, she will call later when he is out of surgery. Will keep you informed when we hear more. Jeannine |

No clue as to where but must have been early in the day as the table is lacking refreshments. Gene Jimmie says: Gene, you and John Vaught are the only ones who showed any interest in the picture. | Hi Jimmie, Gene and I just got off the phone with DonNita Schorr. Bill was admitted to hospital in Harlingen, Tx. on Thurs. for chest pain. Today they did an angiogram and he has problems including an aneurysm on outside of heart. Trying to put in a stent would be more risky than surgery so on Tues. he is having open heart surgery. Prayers from all are in order, thats for sure.. There was a question of him getting back home but that was not a good option, so they will have to stay there for his recovery and cardiac rehab. He is at: Valley Baptist Hospital 2101 Pease St. Harlingen, Tx. 78550 Rm. 303 as of now Am sure he would love to hear from fellow Ashlanders.... We did ask if it was okay to spread the word and DonNita said, most definitely.... Jeannine and Gene |

| Hey John, I knew there must have been an easy fix to
repairing those pumps. I think at the time the
MM's were all tied up with a main engine over haul. I remember
that part of my shipboard tour was being able to stand inside one of the
engines cylinder. They were massive. I couldn't
help fix either at the time because I was to busy learning how to become

adjust the valve rods on the recipicating pump and he could put the adjustable wrench away. No need to bang the thing !!! Back in 56 & 57 I did the job for the starboard boiler room a few times. Leaving the pump room to Cornell untill I got back from the 5 min. job. Altho when I needed some heavy lifting done the call went out for "Herby Mays" from the boiler room . My First Two Weeks as a Gator!Late in the afternoon on November 16, 1965 I reported aboard the USS Ashland LSD-1. A scared kid from Los Angeles I never heard of the Amphibious Navy better known as the Gator Navy, I never heard of a small Naval Base outside of Norfolk VA called Little Creek, but here I was, not knowing a soul and scared to death. I came from a family of proud Americans. My dad served in the Navy as a Gunners Mate during WWII and that’s all he spoke of when recanting his Naval days in the South Pacific. He was proud of his oldest son’s decision to keep a tradition that he started. But I was still scared. As I reported aboard I was turned over to the Master at Arms who was a nice man until he became tired of my continuous referral of him as “Sir”. He politely explained to me in a firm but somewhat respectful manner that he was no officer and if I said “Yes Sir” to him one more time that my first night aboard the Ashland was one I would never forget. Unbeknown to him, forty-two years later I still haven’t forgotten that first night and the following two weeks thereafter. After looking at the red stripes (FA) on my arm the Master at Arms escorted me to the bunking area belonging to the Boiler Tech’s and told me to stay here until tomorrow and then he would figure out where I belonged. Damn I thought I really pissed this guy off. You see, there was a boiler overhaul going on and when the BT’s returned from their shift they were sweaty, smelly and covered in black soot and not looking real happy. Needless to say they weren’t very talkative neither. I didn’t sleep much that night, with the constant snoring and other noises caused from the apparent food served earlier in on the mess deck. The next morning one of the FN’s took me under his wing and said come on lets go to chow and then I’ll give you a tour of the boiler rooms where you are going to be working. After chow we headed to the bawls of the ship called the boiler room. The one we were in was still operational because we weren’t of shore power at the time. As we entered I noticed a rather large man sitting with his arms crossed and holding a very large 24” crescent wrench. He was the BT2 on watch and was sitting directly under the fresh air vent so to keep cool. He had two precipitating pumps on either side of him that were steam driven and making this loud sound, Kacha-------Kacha-------Kacha. My new buddy the FN was showing me what gages we were responsible to read when I asked him what the BT2 was doing there just staring straight ahead. He told me that he was watching the pumps on either side of him and also making sure that everything was operating correctly. I then asked why the big wrench he was holding. The FN said, just watch and you’ll learn. In other words, stop asking so many questions. About that time I heard a Loud Kathunk and seen that the pump to the right of the BT2 had hung up and stopped. Without hesitation the BT2 swung the large wrench, smacking the pump at the housing base and it took off, Kacha-Kacha-Kacha-Kacha-Kacha like bat out of you know where. I thought to myself, what a job, I could do that! About half way through my tour which had turned into a watch, the Master at Arms found me and said come on, you're in the wrong department. He took me up to the main deck and then forward towards the folk Sal. He opened the hatch and took me into a shop of sorts with sheet metal tools, workbench’s and a television and several swabies standing around drinking coffee. What a change, these guys even had pressed dungarees. As we entered he introduced me as the new striker for the shop and I met the Chief, Albert A. Jackson. A slightly gruff individual that apparently had been out rather late the night before and was in no mood to chat. He turned me over to a 2nd Class Diver named “Hatch” and said, find him a bunk and a job and keep him busy until Redman gets back from leave. I didn’t know what a Redman was, I later found out it was another 2nd class Shipfitter and not a person with a severe sunburn. After moving my gear from the BT’s area to where the “R” Division personnel slept, Hatch took me to the shop and introduced me to the new tool of my trade, the plunger. Yep, I had moved up in the world from BT wannabe to a Terd Chaser. The plunger was what it was, a wooden stick with a red rubber cup on the end of it. I don’t remember how many toilets and urinals there were on the Ashland but she had a bunch! After weighing my options and reflecting upon the first night I had spent aboard with the BT’s, I decided to become the best toilet plunging terd chaser the Navy had ever scene. After chow and muster every morning, I began my quest and I kept going until every waste-handling fixture aboard was functioning to it’s potential. Two weeks had gone by and upon reporting to the shop after chow in the morning, there was a new face, a tall thin guy with a New Jersey accent telling everyone about his adventures, it was Redman returning from leave. As the Chief showed up, the shop quieted down. Someone introduced me to Redman and said this is Botonis, he went to the same school you did Redman! I looked really hard at Redman and for the life of me I couldn’t remember him from my school days so I said, “Really, you went to Simi Valley High School?” The shop kind of laughed and the Chief said no dummy, Shipfitter “A” school! Not thinking I responded, I haven’t been to any Shipfitter “A” school and then there was silence. A few hours later, it was discovered that someone had put on my orders that I was a shipfitter instead of a shipfitter striker. The division officer was then called to the shop where he and the Chief along with others including the Master at Arms were discussing my future. All I heard was the BT’s are short handed and could use him! About that time Redman spoke up and said that he had been talking to Hatch and others and that this kid (meaning me) had shown great promise of being a premier terd chaser and they felt that we should give him a chance to excel at his newly found profession, besides Calvin Nichols another FN could use some help dragging welding leads around the ship. So there I was, with a new family which included a short stumpy carpenter with gold hash marks that dragged the ground named Pop Swazy, a diver named Hatch that had a profound obsession with tattoos that his wife hated, a DC man named Bill Law that felt sorry for this kid away from home for the first time so he and his wife had me over to their place on my birthday, and a Chief Petty Officer that decided to show me the ropes of partying in a community that really didn’t care that much for sailors, Norfolk Virginia in the 1960’s. It was a great time in my life and a time of setting values and priority’s. A time of becoming a man in a world among some of the greatest men I would ever meet, my shipmates, my brothers. I was only aboard the USS Ashland from the 16th of November 1965 until leaving for Shipfitter “A” School February 10, 1967. They were some of the greatest days of my life and I thank those who were part of it. Jim Botonis – USN 1965 - 1969 |

Bob passed away early this morning from complications following his liver transplant. I know he was very proud to have served on the Ashland and to have known so many others in the group. It was such a privilege to have met so many of you at last year's reunion. I haven't completed arrangements yet, but I know he wanted to be buried at sea, so I've already been in contact with the Navy for that. Bob was a good man & I know he will be greatly missed by all who knew him. God Bless, Nancy Lukacs E-mail is lukacsr@cox.net Address is 8729 Graves Ave, Apt 10A, Santee, CA 92071. |

Dear Ashlanders, I wanted to let you know what has been happening with Bob Lukacs. On November 25, 2006 he finally got his liver transplant. Everything was going very well, but he got an infection which triggered a very rare blood disorder (leave it to Bob to come up with something the doctors hadn't seen in 20 years!). He has been in intensive care for almost 4 weeks now and for a while it was touch & go. He is now much improved, and while he isn't out of the woods yet he is on the right path. He has a tracheostomy, but he is already working to be independent in his breathing. His kidneys have failed & the doctors don't know if they will come back, so he is on dialysis. The blood disorder did affect his new liver, but it seems to be recovering. His spirits are good, his sense of humor is intact & he is anxious to get going again. I seriously doubt that we will be able to attend this year's reunion, but we will be there in spirit. I ask that you keep Bob in your prayers & please feel free to contact us. Bob's email is lukacsr@cox.net Our address is 8729 Graves Ave, Apt 10A, Santee, CA 92071. Thank you, Nancy Lukacs |

| December 10 Hi everyone - some of you I've probably already told, but wanted you to know that tomorrow we are leaving the house at 5:00 a.m. to take Al to the hospital. He's have a stent put in his right carotid artery. Is a pretty standard procedure, and he may get to come home Tuesday, but I really doubt it (considering his age and all his OTHER health problems). Personally, I hope they keep him for at least 2 days, cause he has a very strong tendency to overdue it when he gets home. I will go on line again tomorrow night if I don't get home too late, or maybe even early Tuesday before I leave the house, ok? Thanks - Edna December 11 Hi Everyone: Al came through the procedure just fine. He will probably come home tomorrow, but is supposed to really take it easy for a few days. Am very, very tired, so that's all for now. Thanks to all of you who wrote. |

Mike came by Denver and I met him at the airport as he and Annette were on the way to the convention in San Diego. I think that was in 98. | Jimmy, Remember Milford Billhimer, one of our oldest living Ashland vets? (The one I did that small write-up concerning his experience aboard the Ashland during WWII in the Philippines). As you can see he just sent the following bit of his history without any prompting from me, but I was honored to receive it. Just wondered if this is something you might include in the Ashland news, or perhaps include in some future Ashlander. I know he tracks the website and the newsletter. Thanks, Dick Milford Billhimer wrote to Richard Wright: I got out of the navy in late '45 In the spring of '46 I built a waylight block garage with the idea of living in it for 2 years while I build the house, for one reason or another the 2 years turned into 11! In the spring of '55 we started the house. It took awhile as I worked at Bendix, I hired an old carpenter and we roughed it in ,took us 2 weeks during my vacation. The rest, plumbing, heating, electric and wallboard took me awhile. The inspector had me enclose the main breaker box.I had the place plastered cost $550( wonder what it would now) The little women and I laid hardwood floor for a month. I guess you can say we've paid our dues. The picture of the Billhimer Ranch (no livestock, just 3 cats) is 60 years from the start of the garage. Milford Billhimer F1c 1944 |

| Responding to message: 2024 Here is something I came across on the internet about plank owners. Does any one know the tradition about this? Especially the part of being a plank owner of a re-commissioned ship. DEPARTMENT OF THE NAVY -- NAVAL HISTORICAL CENTER 805 KIDDER BREESE SE -- WASHINGTON NAVY YARD WASHINGTON DC 20374-5060 Plank Owners, Plank Owner Certificates, and Planking A "plank owner" is an individual who was a member of the crew of a ship when that ship was placed in commission. Originally, this term applied only to crewmembers present at the ship's first commissioning. Today, however, it is often applied to members of a recommissioning crew as well. "Plank owner" is not an official Navy term, and has consequently been variously defined by different Navy units. Comment: When USS Ashland was commissioned on 5 June 1943 a number of men who were enroute to the ship. Most had never seen Ashland. Straight from book camp they went to serviceschools. Now they were on the way to their ship. Were they plankowners? Enroute they were under orders from the US Naval Training School Command. Comments please! Thanks for the thoughtful posting, Paul. |

| Hi Jimmie, Well I got your MSG. About things being up and running and that you had some responses so I sent a MSG on Monday the 9th and another today Sat. The 14th. I have a lousy feeling that the Ashland E-News page doesn't like my email. :( I recently changed my IP to Cox. I'm wondering if that could be a part of the problem??? Paul Paul, I don't think your server has anything to do with it. The security programs are getting so complicated. On my desktop all Ashland mail ends up in blocked mail. My laptop handles it better so I will be using it from now on. Ron hasn't said so, but I suspect our problems were with GoDaddy.com, our internet provider. |

| Sorry about the delay in getting your messages posted.
This is the fourth time since I was treated for postate cancer that I've had bladder infection. Those of you who have experienced it know how sick you get. Thank to Marty Miller and Paul Rabidoux who sent test messages. Along with your messages we are also receiving spam. I don't know why someone would think old Navy guys would need viagra. Army and Air Force, maybe, but not sailors and marines. Ron Wright didn't tell me what was wrong with the e-news mail form. Ron has been great in offering his help when we need it. Ron is the son of Dick Wright. Over 25% of Americans have Irish ancestors. For those of us who are Irish, or for those who are friends of the Irish, and like like Irish music, there is a 24 hour Irish internet radio station where you can listen to Irish music. It is free. Just log on with your computer. I purchased a $2 cord which allowed me to connect an old boombox to the computer It sounds great. The URL for the station is: www.midwestirshradio.com Ok, enough of that. Let's get on with posting your messages. |

| Jimmie I went on my co-workers computer at work and
brought up the Ashland web site and opened the E-News page and got the same results. Down on the bottom of the page in the status bar, it reads " done, but with errors on the page" I thought maybe only my computer showed that, but finding out it shows up on different computers. It reads as follows: "Problems with this web page might prevent it from being displayed properly or functioning properly." In the future, you can display this message by double-clicking the warning icon displayed in the status bar. Then there is a show detail button, and when I clicked on it, this is what came up: Line: 7525 Char: 1 Error: Object Expected Code: 0 URL: http//www.ussashland.org/news.html Do you know if anyone else is having the same problem? Do you get that when you open the E-News page? The next time you open the E-News page pass your cursor over the counter and see what happens. This sure has me baffled. Paul Jimmie said: "Paul I don't have that problem. I fill out the mail form and click send and another page comes up, which says, Your message has been posted." In a few minutes the mail I sent arrives in my in-box. I have tested it saveral times without any problem." Paul replied: Well Jimmie I get the same thing Thank you! Your message will be posted soon. Every time I reply to a message. But my Msg's never seem to reach you, well I guess I won't be able to reply to any Msg's again. You didn't mention if you get that error message after opening the E-News page or not. Well I guess no sense in going to the web site if my reply's don't reach you. Sorry to bother you and I'll leave it at that. Have you maybe tried contacting other folks to see if they get the error MSG?? Jimmie asks: Is anyone having this problem? Let me know. | Maybe this will help as per: The Ashlander on page 11
for Aug 2006. Military Records/DD214 Update 01. Any of our members can go to the site provided here. www.archives.gov/veterans/evetrecs/index.html Not only can you get your DD-214 but a veteran can ALSO get his/her complete service record. When you fill out the form on-line it will take you through the process, you will be asked to give the veterans Service Number if known, and also the SSN of the veteran, when you come to the \"comments box\" be sure to add \" ENTIRE SERVICE RECORD\" You will be assigned a request number at the end of the proceedure, and asked to print the page, sign it, mail or fax it to the address provided . If you dont have a printer, you can fill out a sheet of paper with your signature and printed name, and dont forget to include the request number on it. Then mail it to St Louis with in twenty (20) days. Otherwise the request will be null and void. I recently sent for my service record and will let everyone know the results. Hope this helps Mike McKeon Sr |

asked Milford Billhimer to work up brief biographical sketch of his experience while aboard the Ashland(LSD-1) '44. Since then I've had contact with Milford several times. Recently I sent him some photos selected from reunions, and this was his response below. After receiving this I thought I might pass this photo on to you with the thought of including this in an appropriate current news item on the web. Also, this could be forwarded to Paul for a future addition of the Ashlander. I think it would nice if these senior members of the Ashland fraternity could be remembered while they can still enjoy this recognition. Dick (Below are Milford's comments) Hey, You are almost as good looking as I am. We attended a reunion in New Orleans and went aboard the 48 in the ship yard. This picture was for our 65th anniversary. I'll be 90 Jan. 5th (and feel it). Milford Milford G. and Mary Billhimer live in South Bend, Indiana. F1c Milford Billhimer served aboard USS Ashland (LSD-1) in 1944. He and others like him, drove the Japanese out of the Pacific in WWII. They all deserve to be recognized. |

After boot camp I went in to Machinist Mate Class A school. Then to the USS Francis Marion APA 249. Then to the Ashland just before recommissioning. Being on the Ashland made me apply the skills that I learned in A school. After being discharged I made my living for many years as a motorcycle mechanic and then on to teaching in a vocational school. I then became involved with optical, mechanical, hydraulic technology and now work for Goodrich Aero Space (Perkin Elmer) makers of the Hubble space telescope. The skills that where planted by the Navy have never left me. I am working on equipment that is used in guidence systems onsatellitess and our country'smissilee defence programs. | Responding_to_message: 2029 Jimmie.. Yes I can say what I learned during my time in B and R Division helped me with the many jobs I have had. Whether it was tearing down and rebuilding pumps or maintaining the machinery, learning how to braize, silver solder and weld (LOL), using a cutting torch, cut and thread pipe, and other things while working in the shipfitter shop. Every thing I learned and done while aboard, I still use to this day, was assembling cars for GM, working for Burry Buscuit in maintainance, rking for a defence contractor, building bomb and rocket trailers, degreasing washers. to installing heating and A/C systems, building electrical switch gear. So, I can say being aboard was a positive thing. Even learned how to cook (mess duty) |

with the "reply" mail form. He wrote yesterday: Jimmy, We have a problem with the site. It won't let us post. I think this is why we have had no messages. It just states "cannot find page". up some interest I'm going to start posting some questions. I would like you to answer by clicking on "Reply" below. If you have a question, send it to me and I'll post it. Now, the first question: Question: Was your occupation in civil life after leaving Ashland the same as when you were aboard? Example: Pipefitter aboard, pipefitter afterwards. As for me, I had worked at Inland Steel, East Chicago, Indiana, for a short time before going into the Navy to to escape the Korean War draft. Out of boot camp I went to Electrical "A" school. Left Ashland as EM2 and returned to the steel mill. Took the electrical test and moved into the electrical generation and distribution department. Worked in the mill's power dept. for the rest of my working years. Retired in 1990 as Electrical Distribution Supervision with 38 years of service. I used everything I learned in "A" school and aboard ship. What about you? |

| I'll use another excuse this time for being late with
the news page update: The wireless connection on my laptop decided it didn't want to work. Got that working and found my wireless mouse won't work. I've had this laptop for over a year and never learned to use the touchpad built into it. It is a different animal. (I gave up and went to Office Max and bought another wireless mouse before going any farther with this.) Chuck Bradley did a great job and the reunion at Philadelphia was enjoyed by all. Some new faces and then there were those who always come but couldn't make it this year. As for me, I couldn't convince anyone that I look exactly the same as the day I left the ship. Mark your calendar for the third week of June, 2007. The reunion will be back in Kentucky, the geographical center where most of our members live. Paul Adams has sent a notice that material for the next newsletter is to be in his hands by July 15 so he can take it to the printer by August 1. | Carrie: I am responding to your msg to Jimmie Barnes re the Plank Owner listing. There was no oversight or malice on my part in putting the list together. By naval definition, "A Plank Owner is an honored member of the First and the most illustrious crew which distinguished itself forever when it commissioned the USS Ashland LSD-1". The commissioningdate for the Ashland was June 5, 1943 and the list I published was the crew Muster Roll from that date according to our records. Troy came aboard shortly after that date as did a number of other crew members that he served with from the beginning. I have no way of determining a date as to when one would be considered a plank owner if they came aboard afterJune 5, 1943. Also, I am sure that Troy does have a certificate that lists him as a plank owner as I'm sure they were a lot more flexible in passing out certificates than my rigid definition. I will attempt to go back in the records and maybe reach a cut-off point as to when someone my be considered a plank owner and publish that list which certainly would include Troy. Hope this may provide a little satisfaction to you and be sure to convey my regards to my favorite Texan. Paul Adams Jimmie Barnes responds to Paul's remarks: Paul - This isn't the first time this has come up. Shortly after our Association was formed some said they were plankowners and others said they weren't because they were not listed as ship's company on the day of commissioning and physically aboard when the commissioning pennant was raised. On commissioning day not all of Ashland's crew were aboard. In fact, some had never heard of Ashland and were unaware their orders listed them as assigned to Ashland. They were scattered all over the county in various service schools where they went from basic training or other commands. They were not added to Ashland's personnel roster until they physically reported aboard. At the commissioning of USS Ashland (LSD 48) one of our plankowners, Ed Rice, passed the long glass during the ceremony. Ed was not aboard USS Ashland (LSD-1) when she was comissioned. He was enroute to the ship from another duty station. Our Association listed Ed and others as a plankowners even though they were not on the ship at the commissioning. Troy has a certificate signed by Ashland's first captain. If Commander Atkeson said he was a plankowner then he is one. No discussion or investigation needed. |

| Just received word today (5/15) of the death of Richard
W. McNamara on April 24, 2006 from his wife Muriel. Our records show him aboard in '50-'52 and the rank of Capt. although I'm not sure if that was his rank aboard the Ashland. He had a letter published in the last issue of the newsletter and really wanted another West Coast reunion for us. He did serve as Treasurer of the Association for a time. Paul, Seems to me he was a Lt. while aboard Ashland. He was the gunnery officer. The last time I talked to him in person was in Norfolk several years ago. The reunion was over and we were checking out of the hotel. He and I stood by the door and talked. Sorry to learn of his passing. God be good to him. Jimme |

When he received the current copy of the April 2006 Ashlander, his name wasnot included on the roster of original plankowners of the USS Ashland (LSD-1). Dad his his original plankowner certificate showing a commission date of 22 June 1943 and signed by Commander Atkeson on that date. Please look into this oversight and correct it. Dad would be so proud to have his name printed beside all the other men who served on LSD-1. Thank you for your help. Regards, Carrie Frizzell |

At the end of each line is the dates they were aboard, so it isn't hard to find the ones you are looking for. The LSD-48 is a new ship, not our old ship with a new number. |

| Lora Dewhurst reports on Carl's health: Carl's recovery has been remarkable, even to the therapists. He actually is now able to climb the stairs once a day - he had his first real shower since he's been home (today), and we are back in our own bed. We are still going to move in the fall, though, to get the bedroom on the main level. He does small weight & stretch band exercises each day, and has a pedal machine he can either use with hands or feet. He can actually walk around the main level of the house unassisted(no cane or walker) - and I never thought he'd be able to do that again. He is also driving again too, although it will be another week or so before he drives by himself again. He is also working on being able to go around to the back of the van unassisted & get his scooter out. He can use the walker to go into a restaurant or for a short walk. We do have to weigh him each morning, to be very careful about water wieght gain - and he still gets short of breath with increased exertion - but that's to be expected. And (dare I say it?) I actually think we will be able to go to my brother's wedding in Florida in May. I will be going back to the office full time on 4/11. Many thanks for everyone's good thoughts & prayers during what had been a very difficult time for us, and let's hope he continues to get better - and not go back in the hospital. Lora |

| Hi everyone: Well..... finally got Al's treatment
situation accomplished! I called the doctor yesterday asking why it was taking so long for Al's "oxygen". Well.... the girl (who is new) didn't process it (probably lost her job). But is a good thing, cause the doctor wants him on a nebulizer, NOT oxygen at this stage. They were out at the house with everything 2 hours after I called the doctor. He's taking Xopenex (levabuteral HC) 1.25 mg. So we started the "treatments" this morning. And guess where Al is right now? You're right - out smoking! Oh well, what am I to do? I asked him to go back to the VA and go on the patch again. Or at least get an anti-anxiety med. We'll see what he does. I'm getting increasingly more upset and anxious with him, so may have to go on something myself. Will try my hardest to avoid THAT though. If I didn't care about him, it'd be a lot easier. Will keep you posted. Edna Jarvisnewp@aol.com |

| I was transferred to Ashland sometime in 63. We were
sent to the Cyprus crises in January 1964. Didn't see land except Gibraltar for 3 months. Pulled into Malta and was discharged for there to Brooklyn to muster out. I was damage control yeoman and worked close to shipfitters shop. Don't remember to many men aboard but loved the Ashland. We had a small ships band and I sang and played the guitar. A guy named Tom played drums. Would appreciate anyone who played with us to get in touch. I just surfed on this site and really proud I found it. Brings back memories. They say I will also will get a caderaic and have to get it removed before my sight comes back to normal. | Lora reports on Carl’s health: January 4, 2006 Unfortunately, Carl had to go back in the hospital yesterday. Not only is he having trouble with his congestive heart failure again, but they found blood clots in both legs. So he will probably be in about a week this time. Tuesday, January 10, 2006 Carl has been discharged from the hospital again and has gone back to the first rehab facility he was in. They felt he still needed more assistance, and I agree - I had my hands more than full when he was home. I would guess he'll be in about 3 weeks or so - that's what physical therapy was requesting. His phone number is 614-895-1642. Hopefully next time he comes home he'll be getting around better. |

I am actually doing more work now than I was before, taking care of him - but my parents will be here for a while to help, so that's a plus. I probably will be working from home for a couple weeks after I do start working again, as Carl has doctor's appts. and won't be driving for some time - so while I will be back to work on the 17th, I probably won't be back in the office until around Feb 6. | Lora reports on Carl's continuing health
problems: Well - we got our bubble burst yesterday. The blood testing that was done at the hospital last week showed 2 serious blood infections (one a staph infection), so he is back in the hospital. They are giving him some aggressive antibiotics. I think he will be out of the hospital by Tues., going back to the rehab center. But now I have no idea when he will be home. They seem to think now that this is what is causing his hallucinations, etc so hopefully those will go away. He will be on this antibiotic for several weeks, so this is something they have to teach me to give him at home. Reegarding my work schedule, I will be taking off until the 1st at least (my parents are still coming next Wed.). If he comes home before New Year's I am going ahead & taking off the time in Jan. I already have scheduled. If not, I will come back to work until he does come home. Once again, stay tuned....... Merry Christmas & Happy New Year to all of you! |

| Lora Dewhurst reports on Carl's health: Update on Carl:
I will find out for sure tomorrow, but I believe Carl will be coming
home within the next 2 weeks. I am going to take some extended vacation to try to get him stronger so he is safe to be home by himself (I don\'t think he\'s ready but you know how insurance companies are - we had to transfer him to another facility around the first of the month when my insurance ran out - now his is cutting him off). We are also going to check into home care. But many thanks for all the thoughts, prayers, and cards - it helped us get through a dark time. Chris Brunner: Sadly, I found out that Chris Brunner passed away today. Wilma called & gave me the news. He served on the Ashland at the same time as Carl - I think he was a fireman. He had been diagnosed with Alzheimer\'s a few years ago. So please keep Wilma in your thoughts and prayers also. Carl & I wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a wonderful New Year. We won\'t be able to be in Philly, but God willing, we will be in KY in 2007. |

I do the Ashland history for the newsletter and have only ten days to get my material typed and sent to Paul. In this issue I tried to cover the months of October through December of LSD-48. Can't get all three months in this newsletter, too many exercises and ports of call for LSD-48. We aren't getting any feedback from men off LSD-48. Do you enjoy reading about your ship, or is it that it doesn't cover the time when you were aboard. I have the Command History from Commissioning through 1997. | Lora reports on Carl's health: Carl's progress is slow, and he has been having GI problems and minor infections - so it doesn't look like he will be home until sometime in January. We are, of course, disappointed because we were hoping he'd be home by Christmas - but he is much better than he was. He has lost over 40 lbs. and looks good. For anyone who would like to call him, his number is 614-895-4814. He does have a roommate, so be sure to ask for Carl. Cards can either be sent to our house, or directly to him at: c/o Village of Westerville Nursing Center 1060 Eastwind Dr. Rm. 205B Westerville, OH 43081 He does get lonely when I'm at work, so I'm sure he'd love to hear from any of you. (Anyway, it probably would do him good to talk to someone besides me all the time!) Many thanks to everyone for keeping us in their thoughts & prayers at this difficult time, and we would like to wish all of you a happy Holiday Season. Lora |

| Some time ago, Eugene Bracken researched and found the
bell to the USS Ashland. The crew members of the USS Ashland LSD-1 made arrangements for the bell to be transported from Florida to Lexington where it is now displayed at Henry Clay's home. At the time, there was approximately $1000+ lacking for the transportation and housing for the bell. My father, Troy R Frizzell (S1/c 1943-1946) generously paid the amount owing in one check. He also told Mr. Bracken at the time that his contribution should remain anonymous. After a discussion with my father, I have decided he should be acknowledged for his gift. He is very proud to have served his nation in WWII and equally proud that he was able to make this contribution for his ship. He deserves the recognition. Please let everyone know "Tex" made the contribution that paid off the debt for the bell. I am pleased my father was able to offer this donation for his ship. Thank you for your assistance. Please let me know if there are challenges in which I can help. Regards, Carrie Frizzell |

| Lora's update on Carl's health: Carl is
continuing to get better - he now has a tentative coming home date of around Dec 1 (about 2 weeks before I expected). They are going to re-evaluate that weekly. But he is finally getting showers, a haircut, eating regular food (watching his sugar though). A big test comes today - to see how well he can get in & out of a car. They have had him using his walker. He's still weak & his therapy makes him tired (he usually sleeps afterward). Not sure yet if he's going to have to constantly use oxygen; that may curtail a lot of our travels if that's the case. He still also has to get his stomach tube and his PICC line out. We will obviously be spending the holidays at home - a little tough but I will just be overjoyed to have him at home again. I've been telling everyone that's the only thing I wanted Santa to give me! I will let everyone know when he will defintely be coming home. I will be taking a couple weeks off in December - and probably working from home most of the rest of the month to be with him as much as possible for a while. I want to thank everyone for the prayers and the cards - God has truly granted us a miracle. I think I was the only one who thought he really had a chance - and I had my doubts for a while. He is a fighter, that's for sure. Lora |

I will accept your msg 2037 as an indication that you want to continue receiving the newsletter. There is no way I as Editor would ever agree to make e-mail addresses a part of the newsletter. My experience tells me there does not seem to be anything you could call permanent about these addresses. If you want a listing of e-mail addresses please contact Jimmie Barnes for a list of them as we know them at any given time. There are just too many changes to incorporate them as part of the newsletter. Each quarter I average about 40-50 changes to the Roster and mailing labels for the newsletter. I don't need the heartache of trying to keep e-mails straight. Remember, when I sent out the last newsletter there were still 942 members who had not taken the time to let me know if they still wanted to receive it. Email: psadams@delanet.com |

| Responding to message: 1132 Jimmie, The photographer you remember was George M. Dold. He came aboard as an ET1. He came aboard early in 1954, but did not make the Med. cruise that Fall because he didn't have enough time to serve. I talked to him about six years ago when he lived in the Maryland suburbs of DC. He had spent a long time for the Gov't as a civil service employee. A lot of the photos in our collections were taken by George. He made several trips in helicopters to take pictures of the Ashland. I helped in the dark room and made many of the prints in circulation. Some of them I still have show my lack of practice in the processing of the prints. His departure was how come I got to be the "lead ET" when I had been ET3 for only four months. New subject: In Fredericksburg, some one gave me a "Ashland" Master-at-Arms badge. Whoever gets assigned that post can wear it at reunions! Ed Bolen |

| Responding to message: 1128 Several years ago we were invited to hear Joan Jet sing a song written by a friend of ours. The event was Navy Week in New York and the venue was the USS Lexington (there as part of a naval musuem on the West side of lower Manhattan). Anyway, on the flight deck we met a young sailor with a "USS ASHLAND 48" patch on his uniform I stopped him mid-deck and demanded an explanation as to how he came to be stationed on an Asland ship numbered 48. He just laughed as he knew I was one of those "old LSD-1 mates" he had encontered during his stay aboard the "new" Ashland. He was trim (as we were when we served) and he was really interested in our ship, #1. I told him that we only sailed at night because we were hiding from the Gillette razor blade company (known high seas pirates in the era) but he wouldn't go for it and instead told me of strange woman on the "Ile of Man" who seduced the entire crew while sailing across the Atlantic ocean for a Med cruise (pre-9-11). I hope to hear of him soon. Paul Pitcher Aboard: Jan,1966 to July, 1967 Email: ppitcher@nyc.rr.com |

Second Class Petty Officer who took a lot of pictures and if I remember correctly, he had a small darkroom where he developed pictures. I don't recall his name, nor does anyone that I have asked. | Tuesday, October 18 Carl is now well enough that he has been moved to a skilled facility to get some advanced rehab. He is doing much better, and will be having his drugs decreased in the next several days. He is tickled to death for the change of scenery, and I think his mind is geared up for the challenge that therapy is going to bring, as he is pretty weak yet. Our goal is to get him home by Christmas. Please keep Carl in your thoughts & prayers - he's made 2 goals; the 3rd one is to get home. Friday, October 21 This may have already been done, since we haven't attended the last several reunions - but Carl asked he be removed from the 'master at arms' post. That will allow someone who can make it to the reunions every year to be able to do it. We miss coming, and God willing, we will make Kentucky's in 2007. FYI - they started Carl in at therapy today (pretty intensely I guess - he said he was exhausted), so hopefully he will progress well. |

| On the bad side, Carl has developed blood clots in the
legs. He can still sit up but not try to stand until the blood thinners do their work in getting rid of the clots. They are also keeping him on oxygen around the clock - don't know if it's because he's still weak enough to where he can't keep his oxygen level where it should be. It remains to be seen if that will be permanent. And it will be a while before he gets his strength back. On the good side, once the clots are gone he will be moving to a skilled facility (hopefully another week), and increasing his physical therapy. He is now eating soft foods, can sort of feed himself, the trach has been removed, he can talk, and his mind seems to be coming back (only time will tell if he has any brain damage). So we have far more good news than bad. I expect a setback from time to time, although it's hard when it happens. My goal is to get him home before Christmas. Will keep everyone posted. Lora |

| I just received a newspaper clipping which indicates the
USS Ashland LSD-48 has arrived in her homeport, Norfolk, as part of the USS Kearsarge Battle Group. Also indicated was the fact that the C.O. is CMDR. David A. Owen which means there must have been a Change of Command somewhere. It would nice if we could develop a working relationship with the Journalist on the "48" but to date that hasn't happened. |

| LORA SENDS REPORT ON CARL'S HEALTH: Prayers are being answered - Carl is beginning to make some very good progress. Today was the first day they had him in a chair (a special adjustable chair). Next week he will begin receiving fluids by mouth, getting off the vent totally (they have a much smaller machine he will go to, which provides oxygen but Carl actually does all the breathing work) - and maybe toward the end of the week, starting some speech therapy. He is also mentally much more aware now - although for some reason he still can't seem to write, which bothers me a little. He is displaying a lot more of the emotions you'd expect - wanting to get up, being frustrated because he can't speak (which is why I've been trying to get him to write), etc. So although he has made good progress, I'm still wary at this point. I do not know yet if he will be transferred to somewhere else in mid-October; the insurance company only guaranteed a month's stay in this special unit. Possibly if he is making progress they may not move him; I hope not, because he is getting good care, and I know most of the nurses here now. I still don't expect him home before the end of November at the earliest. Thanks for those who have sent cards - I showed him those the other day & read them to him, and he did recognize the names of those who sent them. So I think he is ready for visitors, for those locally who may want to see him - even though he can't speak yet. He is at Mt. Carmel West (downtown), 5th floor in the Select side of the floor (take the Central elevators) - 5 South, Room 49, Bed B (by the window). At the moment it's nice because he has no roommate, although I don't expect that to last very long. I will keep everyone posted. Lora |

| Carl Dewhurst 1955 - 1958 |
| Here is the latest: Great news - Carl finally was able to recognize me, and has some awareness of what's happening to him. He is still experiencing withdrawl from the morphine, so I am hoping his response will get better and better. At this point I am not sure how much he can understand of what has happened to him. However, now that he is aware, it has made him hard to control - he kicks around all the time (most likely because even though they turn him, he is still uncomfortable). Friday was a very difficult day for both of us, as he struggles to deal with reality and I spent most of the day trying to calm him (without much success I'm afraid). He still does get sedatives at times, but they are trying to give him something other than morphine unless it is absolutely necessary. Also, he is weaning well off the vent so far. He is now breathing on his own about 6 hours a day. But it will be a long process; I expect he will be in this long term unit a couple more months, judging from how it is going with his roommate. He has to learn how to use the trach once they take him off the ventilator. My great prayer was answered, but I still don't have an idea if he has all his brain function. That will only be known with time. But it has given me hope that he will live, and somewhat recover, at least. I hope he will be home by Christmas, anyway. For those of you that are local, I will let you know when I think he is aware and well enough to receive visitors. But he won't be able to talk for some time. Everyone's cards & prayers have been appreciated (and are working!) - please continue to pray for his long struggle. I will tell him everyone is thinking of him. Lora |

| Here is the latest: They did put in the trach tube and stomach tube yesterday. I will be speaking to the doctors tomorrow, but it sounds like they aren't giving him much more than a 50% chance to live - and if he does, he will be in a long term care unit for probably several weeks before he gets to come home. (I am not ready to give up on him yet; he is a real fighter). They will be looking to move him to somewhere long term in the next couple days (I have to speak to the insurance co. liaison at the hospital to see where my ins. will cover him at) - and then I will let those of you locally know where he is. He is still sedated for now. Their goal is to get him off the ventilator (very slowly) and probably at the same time decrease his sedation. So he is still under right now. Many thanks for the best wishes, cards, and prayers right now - it is going to be hard on both of us for some time. I am going to attempt to go back to work Wed. I will keep everyone posted. Lora
correlating the results. I sent out 1,119 copies of the July newsletter and have received back a total of 112 replies. So, if I was to delete all the names off of the Mailing List who did not return a survey form or advise me by e-mail then I would be deleting 1,007 addresses. This is not going to happen just yet but it will in the future. If you haven't returned a slip or e-mail then you should do it soon. I'm sure there will a number of members who will wonder how these things happened. Paul A.
