History of USS ASHLAND (LSD-1) 1961 - 1969

USS ASHLAND (LSD-1) COMMISSIONED, 29 NOVEMBER 1961
12-16 Moored port side to the north side of pier 14, U.S. Naval Ampbibious Base, Little Creek, Virginia.   Receiving the following services from the pier: telephone services.   Ships present include various units of the U.S. Atlantic Fleet, yard and district craft.   1345 Officers and crew assembled for commissioning Ceremony.   1415 Vice Admiral Alfred G. WARD, USN, and party, came to the pier to commission USS ASHLAND (LSD-1).    1500 Pursuant to BuPers Order 104927 of 19 September 1961, Commander Arthur W. Price, Jr., 430937/1100, USN, Prospective Commanding Officer, read his orders, assumed command of ASHLAND (LSD-1), and ordered the commission pennant broken, the ensign hoisted, and the watch set.   1503 Vice Admiral Alfred G. WARD, USN, COMPHIBLANT, broke his flag in this vessel.    The following officers and enlisted personnel were aboard at the time for the commissioning:   See attached list of personnel on board.   1533 Vice Admiral Alfred G. Steaming as before.   1747 USS WALDO COUNTY (LST 1163) joined the formation and assumed the Guide.    2036 Sighted PTA Anciola Light, bearing 049, 22 miles.

October 4, 1962
0747 Anchored in Berth 6, Pollensa Bay, Majorca, Baliaric Islands, in 15 fathoms of water, sand bottom, with 60 fathoms of chain out to the port anchor.   SOPA is CTF 61 in USS CAMBIA (APA-36).    0800 The Commanding Officer, USS CASA GRANDE (LSD-13), with his Executive Officer and party came aboard.  1100 The Commanding Officer, USS CASA GRANDE (LSD-13), with his Executive Officer and party left the ship.    1100 Commander, Amphibious Squadron Four relieved Commander, Amphibous Squadron Six as Commander, Task Force 61 on board USS FREMONT (APA-44).

2148 USS TELFAIR (APA 210) got underway and stood out of anchorage.   2210 USS FREMONT (APA-44) with CTF 61 embarked, got underway and stood out of anchorage.  2216 Lighted fires under Number Two Boiler.    2240 Stationed the Special Sea Detail.    2308 Underway from Pollensa Bay, Majorca, Balearic Islands to Alcudia Bay, Majorca, Balearic Islands, Captain at the conn, Navigator on the bridge.

0730 Commenced ballasting.    0845 Commenced debarkation of boats in the well.   0916 Completed ballasting.    All boats clear. CIC functioning as PCV Boat Control for Red Beach.    1045 Exercise completed. Course 038, speed 12 knots.    SOPA is Commanding Officer, this ship, OTC is CTU 61.7.2 in USs TELFAIR (APA 210). Condition of Readiness IV and Material Condition YOKE (Modified) are set. Ships present include USS TELFAIR (APA-210) and USS WALDO COUNTY (LST 1163). 12-16 Anchored as before.   1240 Pursaunt to orders of the Commanding Officer, Ltjg Julius N. Balog, USNR departed for temporary additional duty as Shore Patrol Officer.   1500 Set the Anchor Detail.   Commenced maneuvering at various speeds to form lee. 1544 Secured the Anchor Detail.

16-20 Anchored as before.   1640 WARNER, D.(n), SA, of ACB-2 was injured when hit bay another man with a coffee cup receiving a wound, lacerated, occipital regaion, no A or N involvement.    Treatment: Cleansed, three (3) 4-0 black silk sutures, dry dressing.   Witnesses: None.   Disposition: Returned to duty.

00-04 Anchored in PCV Anchorage, St. Florent, Corsica, in 14 fathoms of water, rock bottom, with 40 fathoms of chain out to the port anchor, on the following bearings: Pte. de Curza 118.5, Mt. Genova 184.5, Mt. Robbia 218. Condition of Readiness IV and Material Condition YOKE (Modified) are set. Engineering is on fifteen (15) minute standby for getting underway.   Boiler Number One (1) and Generators One (1) and Two (2) are on the line. Ships present include various unites of Task Force 61.    SOPA and OTC is Commanding Officer, USS FREMONT (APA-44).

04-08 Anchored as before.   0730 Set the Ballast Detail.    Commenced ballasting.    0740 While working in well deck, CHBOSN J.A. FRIEL, received a contusion and abrasion to the second toe of the left foot when wheel of fork lift passed over his foot.   Treatment: taped and ice packs, administrated by BRYAN, HMC, USN. Disposition: Returned to duty.   0745 Mustered the crew at quarters.   Absentees: None.

08-12 Anchored as before.   0803 Made daily inspection of magazines and smokeless powder samples. CTF 61 in USS POCONO (AGC-16) assumed SOPA and OTC. 0650 Slipping from wing wall ladder, WEYER, D.P., EN3, USN, caught left leg in tire hanging into well deck, spraining left knee at 1650 24 October 1962. Treatment administered by hospital corpsman. Disposition: Placed on sick list.

Test: Satisfactory.    1012 While scrapping lye from the bottom of a bucket, GUISBERG, L.(n), MM1, USN, received a burn of both eyes when lye flew into his eyes.   Treatment: Thoroughly flushed with water, normal saline and diluted vinegar.    Boric acid ophalmic ointment applied and dark glasses.    Disposition: Limited duty for 24 hours.
